RE: Launched & Tested - Golf TSI
I once had an old 1970's Mark I 1600 golf. POS car, but when the exhaust fell off (like really off) the car felt so much faster, or well the noise made it feel that way.

Drove my one CTI without the branch for a short trip to have the new one fitted...Sounded insane but looking back I realise I must have looked, or rather sounded like a complete tosser David : 083 642 2118 www.mobileimage.co.za |

RE: Launched & Tested - Golf TSI
The thing I have a issue with is that it feels as fast as a GTI. When you put your foot down it not only sounds (It has a slightly more vicious growl) like a GTi but the acceleration feels the same too...
Its such a weird car. Mike |

I actually think its faster then the GTI, because it has passionate supporters behind it

Line them up Mike, it's the only way to see for sure
Renault R26 is a cracking car to drive and decently quick as well. No other FWD hot hatch can match it's handling with the LSD and revised suspension. My only concern with owning a Renault is their notoriously poor resale values in comparison to the VW's which usually hold their values quite well David : 083 642 2118 www.mobileimage.co.za |

Aside from the GTI the Megane Sport is about the only other hot hatch I would consider buying. The Focus ST I drove felt lazy and bloated compared to the Meg and even my GTI. The OPC is well, an Opel and I wouldn't touch it David : 083 642 2118 www.mobileimage.co.za |

RE: Launched & Tested - Golf TSI
lol!
Im doing the test in our Corsa Bakkie (which as you all know it ferociously fast) and I am confident but still nervous... I keep forgetting: 1. Its handbrake then neutral. 2. Mirror, blindspot and then indicate and then blindspot again before turning (Must be in that order!) 3. Use Handbrake at every stop and do 5 point check when dropping handbrake. Geez... They are so demanding and its impossible to do all these things in real life... 1 and 2 I do in real life. But a 5 point check when dropping the handbrake is excessive. Mike |

RE: Launched & Tested - Golf TSI
K53 in the real life is scary.
Worst experience I ever had was being a passenger in a car driven by a newly "qualified" driver who still applied the K53 method to the T. She drove an 1100 MkI Golf and we were travelling up a long, fairly straight piece of road with one lane in each direction(Heugh Rd in PE - Calypso should know it) and came up behind a slower moving truck. In preparation to overtake, she went through the whole mirror, blindspot, indicate, mirror, blindspot, etc. routine. Unfortunately, not being able to concentrate on everything at the same time, she had slowed down while doing her checking procedure and had fallen about 4-5 car lengths behind the truck. Satisfied that all was clear, she moved over to overtake the truck. In addition to having fallen behind the truck, she had also lost much of her forward momentum and was still in 4th gear. Unperturbed she continued the manouever and summoned the immense acceleration abilities of the 1100 Golf in 4th gear in an effort to (catch) pass the truck. I saw my life flash before my eyes as we slowly crept towards the truck in the face of fast approaching oncoming traffic. It was only by the grace of the oncoming traffic moving to the side of the road that we successfully passed the truck. And Arrive Alive would have me believe that "speed kills" |

RE: Launched & Tested - Golf TSI
I just dont feel its practical for everyday driving. There are too many checks...
Just had a driving lesson and did emergency stops. Lots of fun in the bakkie. Instructor reckons I will easily pass... Mike (Im not being overconfident though) |

I thought ST owners hated all things bmw. LoL. Back to the topic.. I have always liked vw, because of their modding potential.. But they are just getting way too expensive(for what it is). Did I read this thread correctly.. 270k for a 1.4 golf?? Thats whack! Also, this is the 1st generation golf that doesnt have a complete new look.. Cosmetically, its actually just a facelift! I am sure vw will still sell many, coz of their fans. |

Time to dredge up an oldie...
Some local VBox data from both the new GTI and 1.4TSI (118 killerwhale version). 1.4TSI is sprightly but not in the league of the pukka hot hatches I'm afraid Golf 6 GTI DSG Power: 155 kW @ 5 100 rpm Torque: 280 Nm @ 1 800 rpm 0-100 km/h: 6.32 seconds ¼ Mile: 14.60 seconds @ 157.92 km/h 1 Km: 26.53 seconds @ 198.81 km/h True Top Speed: 244.41 km/h @ 6 050 rpm in 6th gear (Clock 254 km/h) Test Date: 7 July 2009 Golf 6 1.4 TSI Power: 118 kW @ 5 800 rpm Torque: 240 Nm @ 1 500 rpm 0-100 km/h: 8.39 seconds ¼ Mile: 16.02 seconds @ 145.28 km/h 1 Km: 28.89 seconds @ 185.15 km/h True Top Speed: 231.81 km/h @ 5 300 rpm in 6th gear (Clock 240 km/h) Test Date: 1 June 2009 Scirocco 2.0 TFSi Power: 147 kW @ 5 100 to 6 000 rpm Torque: 280 Nm @ 1 700 to 5 000 rpm 0-100 km/h: 6.56 seconds ¼ Mile: 14.77 seconds @ 156.97 km/h 1 Km: 26.77 seconds @ 197.85 km/h True Top Speed: 244.41 km/h @ 5 975 rpm in 6th gear (Clock 252 km/h) Test Date: 27 April 2009 David : 083 642 2118 www.mobileimage.co.za |
