My Mk II GTI 16v 1800
I'm assuming this is the right place to plonk my 'project car' as it progresses? If not, mods please feel free to lambaste this newbie and move it to the relevant section.
OK, some background. I am a VW nut in PE that also runs a small 2 bar operation looking after, servicing repairing and tuning VW, Audi's Seats etcetera. Until recently I owned a pretty well modified 92 GTI 8v, until I came across a really clean low mileage GTI Mk II 16v 1800. So I quickly moved my red monster (that was more a toy than a practical classic) to get this one. and the interior... Those who know me know that I probably havent left a car stock for the last 8 that I have owned, but a low mileage, well maintained, original and loved GTI like this is becoming increasingly rare so I've decided to leave it stock, and get it as pristine an example as possible. It's my daily drive so whilst I will be taking every effort to reduce wear and tear, I have to be practical too. I've never been into detailing, but somehow this car has inspired me into doing just that, and I'll share my experiences, stupid mistakes and lessons learned as I go along. From the look of it, I will be in good company here to learn, so will always appreciate input |

RE: My Mk II GTI 16v 1800
My Gliptone Liquid Leather treatment arrived last night. One is a cleaner, the other is the conditioner. Apparently very well regarded by restorers, and I am hoping for excellent results!
I'll be taking some before and after pics. As part of my cleanup, I wanted to tackle the leather first, whilst I consider my options on restoring the paintwork. Oh, and what is a 2 bar operation? Eish, who knows, but it isnt money I meant 2 bay. |

RE: My Mk II GTI 16v 1800
Very nice. the car is is very good condition, the km's is very low. When I sold my 91 Jetta year ago it had 260k km's.
To find that old car with so low km's is a rare one. Great find. I be watching this thread |

RE: My Mk II GTI 16v 1800
Guys, I have obviously seen this car in the flesh...a good few times...and I must say it is the cleanest small bumper Mk2 I have ever seen!
Being an avid Mk2 fan and having owned a '92 Mk2 GTi 2.0 16V Exec. it almost breaks me heart to know that I had to sell mine. Would've made for a nice photo shoot don't you think Will? White is definitely The colour for a GTi, without a doubt. Again, I wish you all the best and many happy km's to come! I'll be seeing you later in the week. They pointed me to Rolo Motors, who I know from my MG rebuild days have largely become Emgee Motors, so I gave them a call and they sent it to me the next day. Their number is 011 789 7127 and they have a website at http://www.emgee.co.za Guy I dealt with was Scott, who was most efficient and helpful. The GT11 was R105.20, the GT12 was R74.10, which was pretty reasonable considering the exchange rate. I expect the stock was quite old though, based on the cheap price! |

Very interesting about the Gliptone. I have read a lot of comments on UK forums particularly from restorers of classic cars about Gliptone. Please will you post some before and after pics when you get to the seats.
