An interview with
Springbok

Avatar: What does it mean-
The V6 fitted to the 156 range of Alfas has to be one of the most beautiful looking engines fitted to a normal sedan. Whenever I "pop the bonnet" I always wait for the reaction.

What do you like most about detailing?
The ability to turn heads at robots and comments from work colleages.

What are your favourite products/processes and why?
Claying because it's the best kept secret to a really smooth finish.

What’s your dream car(s) and why?
A fully restored Alfa GTA circa 1970. I would keep it as a weekend drive and for exhibiting.

What’s your favourite previously owned automobile?
Since it has to be previous, my previous Alfa; also a 2.5 V6

Tell me about your first detail?
My late father was a car buff and taught me how to wash and wax a car. I just took it from there. I always loved a clean shiny car.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned?
How to use a DA polisher. That and claying.

What are some of your other hobbies and interests?
Premier League Football (I'm a Chelsea fan), Motor racing (I used to marshall). All matters Alfa. I used to Skydive competitively.

Do you have any pets?
1 Dog - a Staffie. 2 Cats. 1 White Rat - my son's. 1 Gerbill - my other son's girlfriend's.

Name three techniques that you think you should share to fellow Detailers.
Sheeting when rinsing, Claying and using a QD while drying.

Where are you from and where do you live now?
Cape Town and Cape Town.

What was your first car and what got you interested in keeping cars perfect?
A very old Volkswagen Variant. As mentioned above from my Dad.

Current automobiles-
2004 Alfa 156 V6 Ti

What motivates you to detail?
I find it therapeutic and I love the final result.

Would you ever pay someone else to detail your car?
Yes, but only someone like Carn.

Does detailing run in the family at all, or are you the only normal one?
Not at all. They all think I'm loony.

What is your favourite part about detailing?
When I'm finished and take one last lingering look while closing the garage door.

If detailing is a hobby for you, would you like to do it full time, or do you feel that it would take the fun out of it?
No not full time.

What is your favourite car to detail and why?
My own. I know every square inch of it.

Do you prefer to detail a Supercar or everyday car?
Never had the opportunity to detail a Supercar.

What detailing tool do you think every detailer should have in their arsenal? (Excluding the obvious stuff like wash mitts etc.)
A polishing machine - DA or Rotary.

What are your current favourite brands and why?
A lot of Meguiars
Aerospace 303
Car-Lack Sealant.

What do you do when you’re not detailing?
Checking out the detailing forums.

A few quick fire questions:

•Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Lamborghini.

•Wax or Sealant?
Sealant

•Rotary or Orbital Polisher?
Orbital

•Hamburger & Chips or Healthy food?
Depends if my wife is watching.

•Coffee or Coke?
Coffee first thing in the morning, coke later - but I really have to watch my intake.
