Soft plastics would be my guess. Most often they also correct easily so I think it is purely down to their comparitive hardness vs the paintwork.

Depending on how bad they are it could be 20 mins, or it could take over an hour. If the outside of the pipes are knackered I usually opt for an abrasive pad in and out followed by a light polish with ALutech.

Newer pipes that are still nice and neat on the outside are typically cleaned with APC and then polished with Alutech on an oldish microfber towel. The inners almost always get the abrasive pad treatment followed by Alutech to bring back some of the shine.
