Remini Red LR Freelander - Take 2
I did a complete detail on my wife’s car during the December 2009 break. However, at some stage during my commuting phase between Cape Town and JHB, I noticed some serious damage on the one side of the vehicle…
Let’s just say that in the interest of saving our marriage, we have decided to “park” the discussion about how and where this damage happened, but it seems that some idiot drove into the vehicle while it was parked. That is Scenario A. Scenario B is apparently not possible ![]() Anyway, after we relocated (driving the car down to Cape Town), I decided that it was a good time to detail it again. My main aim was to remove the scratches on the side, if possible. I used the following products from my stock and a recent purchase from Carn: Megs Gold Class Shampoo Adams Clay Kit CG Cut 1.5 Menzerna PO 203S Collinite 845 303 Aerospace Protectant Raceglaze Leather Kit Sonax Glass Cleaner Some random before pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() LOL at ex-Vaalies visiting the beach every day in Winter! ![]() The affected area before washing: ![]() ![]() Work in Progress: All taped up and nowhere to go ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The affected area after washing: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I initially tried using only the Menzerna PO 203S, but some of the scratches were too deep. Thereafter I used the CG Cut 1.5 with the orange LC pad followed by the Menz with the white HL pad. This seemed to do the trick, although some fine scratches are still visible. (Question to the experts : I guess a rotary will be the next step if I want to remove all the fine deep scratches?) Final reflection shots: ![]() ![]() ![]() Some random after pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was very impressed with the Menzerna PO 203S and Collinite 845. Both really go on and off very easy and leaves a very nice finish. The 303 Aerospace Protectant finish seemed very nice in the garage, but after some exposure to rain / dew it does not seem to last very long... The Raceglaze Leather Kit must be the best leather care product I have used to date. I was very impressed with the ease of application and the leather smells brand new again. In fact, the whole car inside smells like a new one. ![]() Thanks for looking! |

Great work there PaulVW... Car looks really good again.
Hope the wife gave you a good back rub after magically fixing that scratch. How long did this all take? I also hope you have decided to take up Kitesurfing since you have moved to Cape Town! You need any assistance on that I will be glad to help. Where abouts in CT are you? |

(I am now busy with my GTI and she even brings me beer in the garage ![]() This job took about 3 weeks, but I only worked on it on 2 weekends and a few week days after work as I had a rather nasty flu during the same period. I would say about 15 to 20 hours full time. (28-07-2010 09:36 AM)Vincent Wrote: I also hope you have decided to take up Kitesurfing since you have moved to Cape Town! Yes man, I am very keen on Kitesurfing. I stayed at my inlaws in Langebaan for a while but the travelling time was hectic. I was thinking of going on a Kiteboarding course in Langebaan initially, as I was thinking it should be easier to start on the lagoon rather than the sea? I am currently staying (renting) in Atlantic Beach (close to Mekbos/Blouberg) and I work in Woodstock, but we are still looking for a house to buy. Property prices are way higher here than in JHB. Thanks for the offer man! I don't know much about the sea etc. so I will be keen to learn. From which area are you and where do you do the kitesurfing? I will be keen to come and spectate" some time! I am now busy with my GTI and it is a walk in the park after this one. I don't even need a ladder to do the roof! ![]() |

RE: Remini Red LR Freelander - Take 2
PaulVW... I am a sponsored Kitesurfer... Used to be an instructor as well. It's in fact no easier to learn in the sea or the lagoon. The lagoon can in fact be more choppy than the sea. Thankfully the sea on the Blouberg coast is very nice and safe. Just very cold. Kitesurfing is not that hard to learn. So will def help you out if you keen.
I live in Tableview very close to Bayside Shopping centre. Yeah house prices are insane in CT. My uncle lives in Atlantic Beach... Have done 3 cars in there as well. Did a Black ML320 a while back and a White A180. That is really such a grande place to live. |

Geez Vincent those pics are insane man! Great stuff!
I am really keen to learn more about Kitesurfing. I would really like to come and check what is involved. My knoweledge of the sea is very limited, but I have done a fair amount of skateboarding - in my younger days ![]() I am just a bit tied up for the next 2 weeks & weekends, but after that I will send you a PM to find out when you are going again! Yeah, I have seen a few cars with potential in Atlantic Beach! Seems most okes there just get their R500k+ cars washed by the gardener with his one bucket system. ![]() BTW - this is the sport that I (currently) rate as the best in the world ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Awsome pics... that your rally car?
Yeah look Kitesurfing is an expensive sport to get into... but def nothing like the kind of cash layout for Rallying. Just take that Evo I polished last week... PE... Friday... 1 big rock in the way... Gearbox broken... 200k Damage. OUCH. |

RE: Remini Red LR Freelander - Take 2
Yes that was my car. We (me and the wife as navigator) won the 2008 Northern Regions Class S1 with that car. I have a few nicer pics but I will have to search for them.
But I also had to sell it as the sport became too expensive. Its crazy what costs the top guys are spending! I still navigate and service for other guys from time to time, but hopefully I will be able to run a regional car here sometime. (28-07-2010 11:10 AM)Torres1 Wrote: Great work Paulvw.
