Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 11-05-2009 08:31 PM

Hello Guys

Im 18. Bored and Im getting my drivers in a month... Basically the car hunt is on...

I yearn for a Audi A4 Avant 1.8T (B5) but insurance classifies that as a "performance car" and I cant get it insured... Argue

I have a budget of about R55 000 to R60 000 to play with and want something decent.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Mike

as a first car, and at your age.... why would you want an avant??

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - freerider - 11-05-2009 08:39 PM

you can get a VERY nice e36 325/328i for that money, and they are awesome handling cars.

at 18 and your first car, you surely got to factor in fuel economy and service related costs?!?!?

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 11-05-2009 08:48 PM

Ok... Avant... hehe

I detailed one last year and just fell in love with it. It was fast, cost effective. Swallowed my mountain bike and detailing kit with absolute ease and I think it looks great with some nice 18 inch rims and a few subtle mods... I also like the reliability and the class the car has...

BMW... The E36 is a very nice car even though my mom had a lemon of a 320i.... lol. My concern is that they are getting old now and I dont want to Fork out on repairs when to be frank the previous owner of the Audis I want have already forked out for me. lol.

Also... It seems that they have all been thrashed and abused by the previous owners... Perhaps Im confused...

there you go, a 325i is brilliant.

Services every 15k kms, and it wont cost you more than R1k for a lube service.
Like one of the guys was saying on bmwfanatics, he drove his 328i from 160k - 240k and never spent a sent on parts other than normal service related items.

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 11-05-2009 08:50 PM

Yup Onyx. I have worked out the costs on the Audi... Its cheap to run as most of the faults in them occur at 180 000km or so and at 210 000km mileage where Im looking they have already been fixed up. hehe

The car will be used only on weekends really as I have a company car during the week...

just be careful, many ppl get rid of audi's when its time for the dreaded cam belt change. BMW's on the other hand have a timing chain which will last a lifetime as long as the tensioner is maintained.

EDIT: the bmw is also very easy to DIY if something does go wrong

Guys you missing the one issue.....

Insurance... lol

If I wanted powa I would buy a 2.8 litre A4 Avant (Tons of them around) and remap it. The issue is insurance wont even insure me for a 1.8T as they claim its a "performance" car.

325 BMW sounds hottt though. lol

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Carn - 11-05-2009 08:55 PM

To be frank I would avoid anything with excessively high mileage regardless of the brand. Do you not have access to the company bakkie during weekends?

If you do I would recommend you ditch the car and put the money you would be spending on it into some form of investment towards getting your own flat/house one day. At the current rate things are going entering the property market is nigh on impossible without a substantial deposit (15-20%).

dude thats the great thing about a car that isnt turbo.... it is not rated as performance but rather passenger sedan.

My first bimmer was a 98 316i and boy did that little 1.8 pull hard Wink I still miss that car.

golf 4 or older shape audi A3 is cool as a first car

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 11-05-2009 08:58 PM

I do but ya... Its a family business you see and technically my dad would own the car and I cant have that... He will annoy me with it and I want my own freedom.

Flat etc is already built into the scheme for later this year so thats not a worry at all.

For a 18 year old Im pretty good at budgeting lol.

Mike
Golf sounds good. They seem to be uber rare though... Been checking dealers and online and cant seem to find one that doesnt look like a truck has hit it...

Audi A3 is cool though. Great fun.

Im going to have to consider the BMW... Its ur fault Don... lol

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - freerider - 12-05-2009 09:13 PM

yeah, not as a first car trust me. the 5 series A/T wont go sideways around corners.... BORINGGGGGGG

On a serious note though, the 528i's dont exactly sip the fuel, when I was deriving one it was sitting on about 14.5l/100, they are heavy and you would get a lot more enjoyment out of a 3 series

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 12-05-2009 09:23 PM

lol! Bluebiggrin

Was a joke... I accidently typed E39 into google and then realised it was actually a E36 I was looking for...

Any other suggestions guys?

Mike

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - freerider - 13-05-2009 09:14 AM

dude, dont buy a 318i, they are still more pricey than say a 320i for instance, people want them because they are fuel efficient, but you will get bored of it very quickly.

Call your insurance and ask them what they will charge you insurance for a 330i, you will not be disappointed Bluebiggrin

RE: Car Help - Your thoughts - Liqui-Moly - 13-05-2009 10:32 AM

Fuel efficiency is not a major concern... The car is only used on weekends and maybe once or twice a week.

Is it so wrong for me to keep wanting the Audi even though there are better deals out there? lol
