First rotary use - freerider - 24-08-2008 02:47 PM

Megesh and I had the chance to borrow a Makita 9227CB for a week. We used it briefly yesterday on a test panel that we have lying in my garage.

This morning I decided to give it a go on a real car Bluebiggrin so called a frien of mine to pop over with his bakkie which used to have stickers on it and has never been polished since it was bought about 7yrs ago. I offered to do half his bonnet as a test.

My plan was to pop out and grab some water paper to get rid of the sticker marks on the bonnet, but I couldnt find anything finer than a 1200 grid so I decided to leave the wet sanding for another weekend.

Didint get rid of the sticker marks, but this is what I did do.

Huge improvement Don.

So what's your comment on the rotary? Not as daunting as it's made out to be, is it.

RE: First rotary use - freerider - 24-08-2008 04:21 PM

def not nearly as scary as its made out to be.

Just a pity I couldnt get hold of any sand paper Sad

Damn, that came out pretty well Don, pity about not being able to wet sand, but yea, pretty great for a first use. Bluebiggrin Glad more and more people I'm speaking to are saying the rotary isn't the big bad wolf like most say. Bluebiggrin

Nice work there, wetsanding would be about your only option to try restore the colours where the stickers were.

RE: First rotary use - megesh - 25-08-2008 08:32 AM

Great going gents. Which compound / paint cleaner and pad combination did you use?

RE: First rotary use - freerider - 25-08-2008 12:33 PM

Went with Menzerna IP and a light cutting pad, then followed it up with FA and a light cutting pad again.

I feel the finish could have been a lot better, but for a first time real car use of rotary I suppose it worked ok Bluebiggrin

RE: First rotary use - MeTsU - 25-08-2008 12:41 PM

Noob question here...the Menzerna IP is PO85RD3.02 hey? And the Menzerna FA is Final Finish PO106FA hey? Bluebiggrin

WOOHOOO! Rofl

RE: First rotary use - Carn - 25-08-2008 01:26 PM

That'd be correct MeTsU however the 85RD3.02 is actually correctly referred to as SIP. PO91L is the original IP and was enhanced to make SIP (for ceramic clear coats) very much in the same way as 106FF was enhanced and became 106FA (for ceramic clears) Wink

RE: First rotary use - MeTsU - 25-08-2008 01:35 PM

Ahhhh k. Bluebiggrin That's why I was confuddling myself yesterday! Bluebiggrin Now, use of these prodcuts on non-ceramic clears?

RE: First rotary use - freerider - 25-08-2008 01:42 PM

They are specifically designed for use on ceramiclear, but work perfectly on normal clear coats and single stage paint as well.

I must appologise for the confusion between PO91L and PO85RD3.02, until this weekend, I was under the impression that I had the normal IP and not SIP which I do indeed have Bluebiggrin

RE: First rotary use - MeTsU - 25-08-2008 01:45 PM

Ahhh k. Big Grin Good to know. Bluebiggrin Thought as much.

RE: First rotary use - Carn - 25-08-2008 02:35 PM

Menzerna's naming policies often leaving people confused Bluebiggrin

The newer SIP is oiler than the older IP and could explain the issues we been having with the original IP then...makes alot of sense now. Will have to try out the new bottles when they arrive then but by all counts I have seen the SIP is far superior to the original IP...easier to work, less dust, etc Wink

RE: First rotary use - sash - 27-08-2008 12:47 PM

What a difference! Is the rest of the bonnet still full of swirls? You could use as a selling point.Rofl
